Stationery Porn

I just wasted approximately three hours browsing the internet for some kind of stationery porn. A few weeks ago, the fabulous Susie of My Milo & Me posted on her Instagram about a stationery delivery subscription service, Proper Post. I am a big fan of beautiful paper, pens and pencils, and also just about the worst person ever at remembering to buy and send cards of any kind for any occasion. I finally revisited her post, determined to treat myself to something lovely for the next 12 months.

My sadness came at the realisation that Proper Post is a British-based company, hence the beautiful sense of style that so appealed to me, but the chances are they don’t deliver to Washington as part of their First Class Post deal. But maybe they do! I emailed them to ask.

In a bid to cover all bases until I hear back from them, I set about googling the various US offerings. They exist, which is nice, but the general impression I got from them was rather lacklustre. The cutesy designs just don’t sing to me. There’s a lot of pink and floral. There aren’t enough pencils with “bollocks” inscribed on the side. I eventually gave up, just as I usually do standing in the stationery aisles of Walmart and Target. Giving up, while I stare listlessly at things that I don’t love.

In the meantime, while I cross all of my fingers and toes that Proper Post might just post all over the planet, I am toying around with picking up my pen again, in a more figurative sense. I used to write fiction, and I finished up a gigantic, rambling, adventure novel in May 2012, just before I jetted off and met Cowboy. I started that novel in 2004. To say that my writing style, ah, evolved while I was writing is an understatement.

I am considering rewriting it. It would be all the rage these days, with everybody so enamoured of Game of Thrones. I grapple with the task in my head. It would take a long time. I haven’t written consistently since 2012, so perhaps the rewrite would not be any kind of improvement. Maybe by the time I get it done, dragons and gratuitous sex and violence will no longer be in vogue. I shouldn’t write for the fashions, though. I used to write just for me.

I also have a quiet idea that I might write a children’s book or two. Our friends have a three year old boy who is very taken with both Cowboy and our puppy, Ruckus, and it has been revealed that this young man likes to play “Cowboy and Ruckus” with his toys, his dad, and complete strangers. I feel a series of adventure tales coming on. I’ll work on it.

I just need a beautiful new notebook and some coloured pens to get started.
